Message from the Managing Director, Richard Huxley

Bureau of Urban Architecture is proud to announce the strategic expansion of our executive team. Two highly respected professionals join the Bureau leadership roster to strengthen our capabilities, enhance our company vision and deliver superior client engagement.

New to Bureau of Urban Architecture is Amy Williams – Business Development Manager. Amy has a strong property background and over 10 years professional experience. Amy will ensure Bureau’s market presence and forward work position is sustained by managing client relationships and targeting key growth sectors.

Richard Wilkinson joins the leadership team as Associate Director after more than five years with the firm. Richard has experience across a wide range of projects, such as; residential, mixed-use, commercial, master planning, urban design, healthcare and defence developments. He will provide oversight on key projects and will play a significant role in converting design concepts to functioning design.

Bureau is committed to the practice of architecture which advances meaningful relationships between architecture, people and place through sustainable environmental design. The announcement of our executive team expansion demonstrates our dedication to this mission.

Development Excellence Award for Kensington Apartments

The Urban Taskforce has unveiled its Development Excellence Awards 2018 winners over a range of categories across the property spectrum. Amongst the various winners was a project designed by Bureau of Urban Architecture - Eighty Eight Kensington.

Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson said “Eighty Eight Kensington… are well mannered apartments that provide the street edge of Anzac Parade with more height on the corner. The project won the Medium Rise City Apartments Development award. The jury saw this as an excellent example of medium rise apartments in an urban setting.”

“Eighty Eight” Kensington is a unique residential experience, unsurpassed in today’s apartment scene. Reminiscent of five-star resort style living, ‘Eighty Eight’ – Kensington is set above lush landscaped gardens, featuring a lap pool, innovative fitness area, BBQ and spa facilities.

Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Awards jury chair and NSW Government Architect, Peter Poulet said “We were very impressed with the quality of apartments being developed around Australia. There seems to be a good balance between design quality and affordability as well as a good focus on the public realm and the spaces between buildings. As our cities move to more apartments as populations grow we will need to learn from the winning examples in this year’s Urban Taskforce awards.”

The jury for the 2018 Urban Taskforce awards was Peter Poulet, NSW Government Architect; Carolyn Cummins, journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald; John Wynne of Urbis; John Ferrarin, Quantity Surveyor and David Tanevski, Secretary Treasurer of the Urban Taskforce.

The Urban Taskforces awards acknowledge development projects that achieve the best outcomes in terms of client requirements, environment, business and community considerations; as well as time, cost and quality. These awards recognise the crucial role of the developer in making a new development an outstanding success.

Amy is a dynamic and results-focused communications and marketing executive, committed to staying well informed on new market trends and initiatives. Amy’s extensive industry relationships have been developed and matured over 12 years working within the property and local government industries across Australia. She currently serves on three industry boards; including Property Council Future Directions, CONECTA and Property Leaders Sydney. Amy has high levels of energy and resourcefulness and a flair for motivating team members and stakeholders to achieve set goals. As Business Development Manager for Bureau of Urban Architecture, Amy will ensure our market presence and forward work position is sustained by managing client relationships and targeting key growth sectors. Amy combines a wealth of practical experience with formal qualifications in communications and marketing. 

Hi Amy, tell us a little about your background – how did you get to where you are as the new Business Development Manager at Bureau of Urban Architecture? 

I was fortunate to kick-start my property career with the Property Council in Queensland in 2010.  Working at Australia's largest and most influential property industry group offered an incredible and comprehensive introduction to the Australian Property market.  It was at the PCA where my passion for the industry began.  In 2012, I was presented with an opportunity to take up the role of National Marketing Manager at MacroPlan, where I worked for six years alongside some of the brightest, most enthusiastic and influential industry leaders in the country.  During my time at MacroPlan I was able to directly engage with a huge variety of clients across all property sectors who were so passionate about delivering city-changing and community-building development projects.

Now in my new role at Bureau of Urban Architecture I am seeing the world of property through a different lens (a very colourful and creative lens).  I am enjoying learning an entirely new discipline and am appreciating how architecture and design influences actions and emotions. I'm excited to share with my network the remarkable designs Bureau is creating. We're a relatively small team but we have some big ideas. 

Why are you excited to be now working in the world of Architecture? 

For me, I’m most excited about Architecture on a macro scale. Across Australia right now, there are major urban planning projects underway that are redefining the identity of entire cities.  I love that these projects offer beauty, symmetry, chaos and confusion, and that architecture has the power to bring it about or change it all at the same time. I think that there is a huge amount of responsibility that comes with designing buildings, precincts and cities and that architects must have a skillful combination of imagination, courage and humility when it comes time to put pen to paper. The team at Bureau of Urban Architecture are creating beautiful (and tangible) solutions for our clients and I'm excited to be part of that process. 

What drives you?  Has there been someone or something that has inspired your career? 

Continuous improvement has always been a mantra that has guided both my personal and professional lives.  I have always held the view that success rarely happens overnight. If I want something bad enough, I establish my goal and go about achieving it.  I’m fortunate to have incredible family and friends who believe in my potential.  They have always inspired me to become better at everything I do. 

You are based in Sydney. What upcoming project can you see having the biggest impact on the city? 

In the short time I’ve lived in Sydney, I’ve witnessed a lot of development and change.  Western Sydney Airport is a transformational project that will definitely have a huge impact on the City. In the shorter term, I’m excited to see what impacts some of the rail projects will have on Sydney. The CBD and South East Light Rail (set to be completed and services running in 2019) as well as the Sydney Metro, the biggest urban rail project in Australian history (Sydney Metro Northwest expected to open in 2019, Sydney Metro City and Southwest set to open in 2024). From a design and architectural perspective, I'm excited to the Bays Precinct come to life as a bustling hub of enterprise, activity and beautiful spaces over the next 20 to 30 years. 

Sydney is still a relatively new city compared to the rest of the world, but it still has some stunning buildings.  What is your favorite? 

It is difficult to select only one as there are so many that I love.  One of my many favorites would be the Queen Victoria Building, bound by George, Market, York and Druitt Streets in Sydney's CBD.  I love the elaborate Romanesque architecture, featuring; the centre dome, stained glass windows and beautifully restored internal arches, pillars, balustrades and tiled floors. It would be remiss of me not to mention the ornate Sydney Town Hall and of course the iconic Sydney Opera House as two other personal favorites. I must add that I am as equally drawn to the potential of modern architecture in the same way I appreciate older buildings.

Project profile: Crows Nest Apartments

Atchison Street Apartments, Crows Nest Horizontal curved timber lines created to inspire a sense of calmness and tranquillity. 

The Atchison Street project is situated on the site of an old grocer in Crows Nest, a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney located around five kilometres from Sydney’s Central Business District. The six-storey block contains 30 apartments, ranging from two and three-bedroom apartments to top floor penthouses and ground floor terraces featuring private courtyards.  The apartments were created to combine a sense of individuality and community, as well as a connection to the unique locality.

The Atchison Street project reveals high quality architectural design, materials and an inspired curved form to create a visually interesting and sympathetic corner statement. The architectural details, skin and setback of the top level maximise privacy and intentionally interrupts the form of the building. The Atchison Street project will contribute to the identity of the area by creating a visual landmark and encourage high quality residential developments in the area.

Bureau of Urban Architecture Managing Director and Principal Architects says, "Crows Nest is a perfect north shore neighbourhood; low in scale and high in activity. It is close to the city, the harbour, freeways north and west of Neutral Bay and Mosman. The area is known for its prominent tree lined streets, mixed use buildings and the distinct Crows Nest house and semi-detached house with its low scale red pitched roofs.

"As a place, Crows Nest is unique and stands in stark contrast to the larger scale of St Leonards to its west. It is a desirable place to live, and with the new metro station proposed to open in 2024, it will become more and more popular.

"In the context of this uniqueness we wanted to create a unique building with large corner apartments.  Bureau designed the building as a four-leaf clover.  Each corner apartments is afforded the best amenity in terms of light, air and outlook. The apartments were designed to have extra space and a sense of generosity with an orientation towards family use.  We aspired to design the building so that it would achieve high environmental outcomes.  The building is light filled, has an abundance of landscaping and the aesthetic of long sweeping timber clad horizontal lines.

"Bureau designed the Atchison Street building in such a way as to provide people with a strong connection to nature. In our design aspirations we concentrated on ensuring the building would form a positive connection and contribution to the location.  Our aim was to establish a new benchmark in low rise apartment building typology."

Atchison Street Apartments, Crows Nest

The building’s footprint resembles a four leaf clover or a four-prop boat propeller and this design strategy ensures a majority of corner apartments with the best amenity in terms of light, air and outlook. The apartments were designed to have extra space and a sense of generosity with an orientation towards family use.  We aspired to design the building so that it would achieve high environmental outcomes but to also be light filled, have an abundance of landscaping and the aesthetic pleasure of long sweeping timber clad horizontal lines.
