The success of this project hinged on environmental design and the sensitive handling scale and topography. Despite being commended as a model for Harbour Foreshore re-development the land was subsequently bought by the government after intense political lobbying.
Commission won in limited design competition
120 luxury dwellings
2.6 hectare peninsular site in Sydney harbour.
All built forms 2 levels high and stepped towards waterfront.
Small building footprints adopted to reduce visual impact.
Public access connects Ballast Point to Birchgrove parkland.
40% of site was designed as public open space.
62% of the site was designed as landscaped space.
View corridors and public access to waterfront are maximised.
Commended by government architect as model Sydney harbour foreshore development. Project stopped when site was compulsory acquired by state Labour government and dedicated as parkland.
